Johnson C. Smith University kicked off the opening of its 150th year Monday with a morning ceremony and a few impromptu dance steps by President Ron Carter. Carter gave an address and those on hand celebrated the moment with the release of 150 gold and blue biodegradable balloons. It was the first of 12 special programs organized to mark the school’s sesquicentennial academic year. Carter announced earlier this month that he will step down as president next year.
