Duke Energy has announced it is giving a $36,000 grant to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Charlotte for a workplace mentoring partnership with Sedgefield Middle School.
The program, called Beyond School Walls, involves companies hosting children from a nearby school at their corporate office. The children (“Littles”) meet in the workplace with employee volunteer mentors (“Bigs”) every other week, building relationships and providing examples of career development. Some of the topics they cover include problem solving, financial literacy and social technology.
This is the fourth year Duke has partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters, which says about 35 students from Sedgefield Middle will be involved. Sedgefield is a Title 1 school, where 83 percent of students qualify for free or reduced lunch (compared with 54 percent district-wide), a national poverty indicator.
Beyond School Walls serves to give low-income students the additional resources, individual support and committed guidance they need to overcome educational challenges and achieve academic success.
