East Rowan High student identified as victim in quarry drowning

A teen who drowned in the waters of a quarry in eastern Rowan County Sunday afternoon has been identified as 16-year-old Shavice Tandy, a student at East Rowan High School.

Tandy lived in North Salisbury Avenue in Granite Quarry, said Rowan County Sheriff’s Department officials.

Statements of those present indicate Tandy attempted to swim across the quarry, became fatigued and began to struggle in the water. He was last seen about 60 yards from the bank.

Dive teams conducted a search and found his body about 90 minutes later in Balfour Quarry, in the 500 block of Balfour Quarry Road.

The quarry is private property with “No Trespassing” signs posted, officials told WBTV.
