Charlotte-Mecklenburg police charged a South Carolina driver with second-degree murder Monday after an accident that killed an elderly South American woman visiting the city.
Police have said Kelly Ann Conkin’s car crossed a grass median on South Tryon Street early Aug. 20 and struck a car carrying the family of Cecelia Buitiago De Gonzalez, 79, of Bogota, Colombia, a passenger who later died.
Police had charged Conkin after the accident with driving while impaired. On Monday she was released from Carolinas Medical Center and served with arrest warrants for second-degree murder, felony death by motor vehicle, felony serious injury by motor vehicle, reckless driving and possession of marijuana.
Conkin was placed on probation and ordered to perform community service after being convicted of driving while intoxicated in Mecklenburg County in July 2014, records show. She was ordered to pay a fine after another driving under the influence conviction, in York County, S.C., in October 2014.
