The water main break and resulting sink hole that blocked outbound Independence Boulevard on Monday remains an obstacle on Tuesday morning.
One out bound lane in the 6800 block is now open, reports the Observer’s news partner, WBTV.
Police have suggested the damage in the other two lanes may be repaired on the 6800 block by noon.
In addition, WBTV was reporting at 9:30 a.m. that a disabled tractor-trailer was blocking inbound Independence near Sharon Forest Drive. The accident happened after a pin broke on the truck when the driver was attempting to make a U-turn.
Because of the sink hole, traffic is being diverted to Wallace Road to Monroe Road. Drivers can then turn left onto Sardis Road north and get back onto Highway 74.
The problem started around 1 a.m. Monday, according to Charlotte Water. Outbound lanes have been closed since then, including both rush hours on Monday.
Parents with concerns about traffic to school can call the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools transportation hotline from 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. That number is 980-343-6715.
