A volunteer firefighter died in a wreck in Statesville on Saturday.
Jackie Cheeks, 51, died after he was thrown from his motorcycle when a pickup truck turned into his path, the State Highway Patrol said.
The wreck happened at about 1 p.m. on Old Mocksville Highway at Swann Road.
Troopers said the pickup’s driver, John Marlowe, was turning left and failed to yield. Marlowe was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
Cheeks was a volunteer firefighter with Sheffield-Calahaln Volunteer Fire Department in nearby Cleveland, Rowan County.
“It is with a very heavy heart that we send this out to you to let you know we lost one of own today,” the fire department posted on Facebook. “Jackie Cheeks was in a fatal head on collision this afternoon while riding his motorcycle. Please keep Lori, Brandon and their families in your prayers.”
