Mount Pleasant

Food ministry: The Mount Pleasant Food Ministry has received a $3,000 grant from the Food Lion Charitable Foundation. The ministry will use the gift to provide groceries to needy families in the Mount Pleasant School District.

Cabarrus County

Unemployment drops: Cabarrus County's unemployment rate dropped to 10.7 percent in April, down from 11.8 percent in March, according to the N.C. Employment Security Commission. The state unemployment rate is 10.8 percent, down from 11.1 percent in March.

Habitat for Humanity

Budget approved: The Concord City Council voted last week to approve the city's fiscal 2010-2011 budget, which calls for the elimination of six vacant city positions and the freezing of more than 20 positions. The budget includes no property tax increases but calls for an increase in wastewater rates that would raise an average customer's wastewater bill by 96 cents per month.
