Cabarrus

Players, coaches of the year

Baseball

Player of the Year: Justin Seager, Northwest Cabarrus

After establishing himself as a marquee player, Justin Seager suffered a devastating back injury in 2009, that put him out for most of the season.

This year, Justin Seager responded again, leading his Trojans to a SPC regular season and tournament title. Seager, who will play baseball for UNC Charlotte next year, also has a younger brother, Corey, who will is also following in his footsteps at Northwest. Corey was an all-SPC second baseman this year and will likely take over at shortstop for Justin next year.

Coach of the Year: Joe Hubbard, Northwest Cabarrus

Joe Hubbard's team was struggling in late April at 8-8 overall, after a challenging non-conference schedule mixed in with their first season in the SPC. But Hubbard didn't panic and neither did his team, as the Trojans won 13 of their next 15 games, losing only to Hopewell in the regular season and to East Rowan in the 3A state quarterfinals.

In that span, Hubbard led Northwest to a SPC regular season and tournament title in their first in the league while enjoying their best playoff run since 2005, when they were state runner-up.
