Giovanni's to open second pizzeria

Giovanni Chiafalo plans to open his second Lake Norman-area Giovanni's Pizza & Pasta this week in the former Twisted Tomato pizzeria on N.C. 150 West.

Chiafalo, who was in the pizza business in New York and Florida for a quarter-century, brought his homemade recipes to the Denver side of the lake in December 2008. He later expanded that space, a block south of Stacy's Restaurant and Campground Road, for more customer seating.

The restaurant features Chiafalo's homemade New York-style pizza, plus his lasagna and other pasta dinners and entrées, calzones, Stromboli, hot and cold subs, appetizers, soups, salads and, for dessert, his zeppolis, cannoli and New York-style cheesecake.

Chiafalo was born in Sicily and came to Brooklyn, N.Y., with his family at age 7. He learned the pizza business from his father. Before his Denver opening, he had most recently run a pizzeria in Hollywood, Fla.

All the dough and sauces are made at the restaurant.
