The Connie Company is coming to the Sherrills Ford Library on Saturday.
Created in 1996, the Connie Company is the youth and education division of the Davidson Community Players. Each summer, the Connie Company hosts camps for ages 4 to 18. Teenage participants culminate their two-week summer workshop by taking their show on the road, playing at various locations around the Davidson area.
This season's production is called "Connie Company Wild, Woolly, and Wonderful." Past productions have included "Connie Company Runs with Rhyme" and "Connie Company Dives In."
Besides its summer offerings, the Connie Company produces a full series for young audiences. Productions include comic retellings of fairy tales such as "Rumpelstiltskin" and such children's classics as "Charlotte's Web." This fall, the Connie Company will also begin an annual musical production. "Once on This Island, Jr.," a retelling of "The Little Mermaid," will feature teenage actors.
If your child is interested in theater, the Connie Company is a good place to start. It offers weeklong summer workshops for children of all ages. Children learn acting methods as well as aspects of production. The kids wrap up their week with a production for family and friends put on at the Armour Street Theatre.
During the school year, young actors can showcase their talent in various productions. There are also classes for kids who may be interested in acting but need opportunities to build stage confidence. In addition, there are technical opportunities for ages 12 and up.
The Connie Company also presents weekly drama classes at the Ada Jenkins Center in Davidson and at the Lake Norman YMCA. Its other community outreach initiatives include annual productions at the Cornelius Family Arts Day and Christmas in Davidson.
Last year, the Connie Company launched a production of "The Bully Show," an interactive game-show-style experience that addresses bullying. "The Bully Show," first produced at the Armour Street Theatre and later at several area schools, included a discussion session with professional youth counselors and the show's cast.
The Connie Company will perform at the gazebo at the Sherrills Ford Library at 11 a.m. Saturday. Bring lawn chairs. Refreshments will be served.
