Golf tournament to benefit Iredell-Statesville teachers

A golf tournament Tuesday at the Statesville Country Club will benefit 35 Teachers of the Year in the Iredell-Statesville Schools.

"Tee Off For Teachers" is open to men and women and includes breakfast, lunch and dinner, beverages on the course and door prizes. The cost is $65 per player.

There will be three players to a team. You can buy a fourth player at the caddie auction, with a minimum bid of $65 per team. The captain's-choice event is sponsored by the Greater Statesville Chamber of Commerce.

Registration is 8-9 a.m.; the auction is at 9 a.m.; the shotgun start after that.

Lake Norman

Welcome troops at lake event Saturday

Welcome more than 300 troops from Carolinas bases at a "Salute to the Troops" in the Lake Norman area 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday.

The soldiers will have a two-hour cruise on N 2 Deep, the lake's largest charter boat, including food and music.

They'll tour NASCAR driver Michael Waltrip's race shop, off Interstate 77 Exit 28 at Cornelius, play volleyball and pool and listen to music at Midtown Sundries at the Lake, off West Catawba Avenue.

Ozzie Smith baseball, softball camps offered

The St. Louis-based Ozzie Smith Sports Academy will conduct baseball and softball camps for boys and girls ages 7 to 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 9-13 at Bailey Road Park, 11536 Bailey Road. Cost is $159.

Children's ministry to help with school supplies

KIDLIFE, the children's ministry at Life Fellowship Church, is partnering with the Secret Angels Project to provide school supplies for local children and their families affected by HIV/AIDS.

The ministry will collect supplies today through Aug. 15.
