Workshops for artists

Joni Purk, an award-winning local artist, will teach two workshops on drawing and palette-knife painting.

"Drawing: The Next Level" will meet from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 16. It's intended for aspiring artists who want to take their drawing skills to the next level. Purk will offer instruction on figure, landscape and wildlife drawing.

The course also will cover rendering in graphite and in pen-and-ink. Proportions, perspective, textures, lights, shadows and form will be addressed, helping students learn to create realistic results. The supply list will be available at registration.

The two-day "Palette Knife Painting Workshop" will meet from noon to 5 p.m. Nov. 13 and 14. Students will learn how to apply, layer, create textures and effects by using a palette knife to create their own painting.

Purk will demonstrate techniques while creating a painting on canvas the first morning. After a lunch break, the class will create its own works on canvas. Palette-knife painting captures the essence of the subject, not the details, Purk said. Land-, city- and seascapes are excellent choices for the technique. Some oil painting experience is required. A supply list will be available at registration.

All workshops will meet at the Huntersville Arts and Cultural Center, 109 S. Old Statesville Road. For more information and to register, e-mail joni@purkartstudio.com. To view some of Purk's work, visit www.purkartstudio.com.
