A summer of consistent training and dedication paid off for two Mooresville teenagers who placed first and third in their first triathlon Aug. 1.
Alexa Del Tufo, 19, a UNC sophomore, placed first in her age group in the UNC Wellness Super Sprint Triathlon in Chapel Hill that consists of a 250-yard swim, 9-mile bike ride and 5K run.
Del Tufo, soccer standout at Lake Norman High School, finished in 1 hour, 1 minute, and was 11th overall out of 145 females.
Jonathon Cooley, also 19, placed third in his age group, in 54 minutes, 34 seconds, good for 15th overall out of 200 males.
Cooley is a member of the Catawba College cross country team.
The pair trained for the event together after running into each other at Lowe's YMCA. Both graduated from Lake Norman High School in 2009, where Cooley was a standout runner.
