Girl organizes oil spill relief concert

A 14-year-old Mount Pleasant girl is raising money for Gulf oil spill relief with a concert she has organized for 5 p.m. today.

The classic rock concert by the band Mother Mable also will include vendors with food, arts and crafts, stationery and other goods, as well as a silent auction.

Admission is free. The proceeds from vendors' sales will be sent to GreaterGood.org, specifically targeted to benefit Gulf oil-spill victims. GreaterGood.org donates money to charities worldwide.

The concert, organized by Hayley Medlin, will be in the park at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, 1260 N. College St., Mount Pleasant.

Hayley, a freshman at Gray Stone Day School in Misenheimer, moved to North Carolina from the Florida Panhandle two years ago. She "knows that the situation in the Gulf is dire," according to a news release about the concert.

"The experts may disagree about how much of the oil still remains in the water," she said, "but one thing is for sure: The tourism and fishing industries in the Gulf are devastated."
