Vision campaign, pumpkins in town

During October, Lions Club International is conducting a global campaign that focuses on the importance of healthy vision.

Stop by the office of Dr. Steven Friedman at Horizon Eye Care in Fountain Plaza to drop off your gently used eyeglasses; or, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 16, join the Cornelius/LKN Lions Club Eyeglass Recycling Event: Go by Cashion's Quick Stop, 19733 Statesville Road, to donate your old eyeglasses. The Lions will also be selling candy and brooms.

Teen Awareness & Safety Seminar

Dating and violence, the causes and effects of drinking and driving and how to be safe when going out with friends will be among the topics at a Teen Awareness & Safety Seminar from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 21 at Hough High School.

The Cornelius Police Department, United Family Services and the BRAKES driving safety program will make presentations.

Dance and lose weight

The Cornelius PARC Department presents an eight-week "Dance 'N' Shed Cardio Dance Class" from 7:30 to 8:15 p.m. Mondays, starting this week at Bailey Road Recreation Center.

Danielle Wasser, a certified group fitness instructor, will lead participants through dances such as the pony, hand jive, twist, limbo, Elvis, bump, moonwalk and MC Hammer. The classes will end with 15 minutes of abdominal exercises.

The great pumpkins return

For the eighth year in a row, Boy Scout Troop 82 has its pumpkin patch next to Bruster's Ice Cream in Cornelius.

Until Halloween, stop by to buy pumpkins of any size, as well as carving kits, decorative gourds and more. Bring the family and take your yearly autumn picture alongside the pumpkins in the patch.

The patch will be open 11:30 a.m.-8::30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.- 9 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Sundays.
