The Cabarrus Arts Council has awarded $22,910 in grants to 11 community organizations for arts activities that directly enhance the quality of life in Cabarrus County.
The Grassroots money from the N.C. Arts Council are presented to nonprofit arts organizations and other charitable agencies that integrate arts programming into their services.
The local arts council has been distributing Grassroots grants in Cabarrus County since 1982. A citizens panel reviews the grants and makes funding recommendations to the arts council's board of directors.
Six arts groups received organization support grants to support their ongoing operations: The Cabarrus Art Guild, $500; The Choral Academy, $2,000; the N.C. Music Hall of Fame, $1,500; the Old Courthouse Theatre, $3,410; the Piedmont Choral Society, $2,000; and the Southern Piedmont Woodturners, $2,000.
Five organizations were awarded grants for specific arts programs: the Cabarrus County Public Library, "Community Reads" program, $1,000; Kannapolis Parks and Recreation, summer concert series, $5,000; Concord Downtown Development Corp., "Spring into Arts Festival" and "Union Street Live!" concert series, $2,500; Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, therapeutic music workshop, $500; and Logan Community Day Care Association, music lessons for children, $2,500.
"Supporting the arts throughout our county is one of the cornerstones of the Cabarrus Arts Council, and one of the primary ways we are able to accomplish this is through the N.C. Arts Council's Grassroots arts fund," said Noelle Rhodes Scott, president and CEO of the Cabarrus Arts Council.
"By distributing state funds to local arts councils, the state arts agency is able to encourage and nurture the arts from the mountains to the coast," Scott said. "It is this beautiful network of arts councils and Grassroots funding that has given North Carolina its great reputation as a state filled with the cultural arts."
