NCHSAA meeting yields rule changes

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association held its winter meeting last week in Chapel Hill.

Among some of their decisions, the board approved adjusting the eight-quarter rule for football, limiting the number of individuals a school can use in both JV and varsity teams to 12 players.

They approved an amendment to the amateur rule, so that players may receive merchandise and other gifts not exceeding $20 per season. The NCHSAA also abolished the rule which allows non-football playing schools to start basketball practice earlier and play six additional games. All teams will now start practice on the same date.

The board recommended changing the softball playoff format to a best-of-three series at the regional and state level.
