It's not too late to get protected from the flu

The Cabarrus Health Alliance is providing flu shots daily to anyone age 6 months or older at the Cabarrus County Human Services Building, 1307 S. Cannon Blvd., Kannapolis.

Flu shots are offered 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays and 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Call 704-920-1205 to schedule an appointment.

A flu shot costs $28 from the Health Alliance. This year's vaccines include protections against the H1N1 ("swine flu") and two seasonal flu strains.

Both flu shots and flu mist are available.

A new high-dose flu vaccine designed to improve immune response in people age 65 and older is also available. The cost of the high-dose vaccine is $50.

Cabarrus Health Alliance will file Medicare Part B, Medicaid, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, CIGNA and Wellpath insurance. Bring your insurance cards.

Flu attacks the nose, throat and lungs, usually comes on suddenly and may include fever, headache, tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, nasal congestion and body aches.

Follow these health habits to help prevent flu and other contagious diseases:

Avoid close contact with sick people. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them.

Stay home when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.

Clean your hands. Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth.
