Davidson to host stage productions

The winter children's production at Davidson College will be "The Emperor's New Clothes," retold by Rupert T. Barber Jr. and directed by Melissa Ohlman-Roberge.

It is produced by the Davidson College Department of Theatre and the Davidson Community Players' children's theater arm, The Connie Company.

In the play, a vain and selfish emperor, two scheming rascals and a kingdom of unhappy people make for a comedy the whole family will enjoy. It is recommended for ages 4 and up.

Performances are scheduled at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. Jan. 21; 10:30 a.m., 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. Jan. 22; and 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. Jan. 23 in the Barber Theatre in the college's Cunningham Theatre Center.

"Into the Woods"

The college Department of Theatre also will perform the musical "Into the Woods" March 25-April 2 in the Duke Family Performance Hall.

Favorite fairy-tale characters hilariously collide as they pursue their deepest wishes. But after the story ends and their wishes come true, familiar stories are upended, and characters must trust in more than magic. The musical has some mature themes and is recommended for ages 8 and up.

Performances will be at 8 p.m. March 25-26; 2 p.m. March 27, and 8 p.m. April 1-2. Admission is $15 for adults; $11 for senior adults; $9 for faculty and staff members; and $6 for students.

This is a joint production with the Davidson College Department of Music.

Second Stage Series

The college's Second Stage Series will offer "Kokoro (True Heart)," by Velina Hasu Houston, directed by Tamara Ruppart, Feb. 16-20. Performances will be in The Barber Theatre in Cunningham Theatre Center.

"Kokoro" is the true story of a young Japanese mother struggling to adapt to the very foreign culture of the United States.

The play is recommended for ages 14 and up, because of adult language and themes. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 16-19 and 2 p.m. Feb. 20. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for faculty and staff members and senior adults; and $4 for students.

Student one-act plays

In Spring Student Production Series I and II, students in the college's Directing II class will present one-act plays. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. April 20-21 and April 30-May 1 in the Barber Theatre of the Cunningham Theatre Center. All tickets are $3.
