Former Concord resident Tyra Watts, 9, is scheduled to walk the red carpet at the Globe Theatre in Los Angeles on April 30, after she won a BizParents' CARE (Child Actor Recognition Event) 2011 award.
The award recognizes child actors for their contribution to the entertainment industry, their industry-related training, community service and education and their parents' effort to be educated about the business.
Tyra moved to Lincolnton in October to attend Lincoln Charter School. She is an honor-roll student, maintaining straight A's while attending auditions and working on TV and film projects throughout the Southeast.
Tyra's latest project was a NASCAR Toyota commercial with Sprint Cup driver Joey Logano, which debuted during the Daytona 500.
In January 2010, shortly after the earthquake in Haiti, Tyra teamed with several Concord churches to obtain four truckloads of food, water, clothing, toys, blankets and medical equipment, including a hospital bed, wheelchair and crutches. The supplies were trucked to Miami's port then shipped by container to Haiti.
Tyra started acting in June 2009 on the set of "The Last Song," filmed in Georgia and starring Miley Cyrus. Tyra is represented by Jana VanDyke, an agent in Atlanta who's affiliated with the Screen Actors Guild.
