Chef to cook lobsters for soup kitchen fundraiser

Longtime Lake Norman chef Tim Schafer will prepare the Maine lobsters for the Mooresville Soup Kitchen's inaugural LobsterFest dinner June 3 to benefit the kitchen's philanthropic efforts.

The lobsters will be caught in the mouth of Penobscot Bay in the middle of the Maine coast, packed up two days before the fundraiser and transported live by plane to Charlotte June 2.

The soup kitchen arranged to get the lobsters from Atwood Lobster Co. of Spruce Head, Maine.

"June is an excellent time to eat lobsters from Maine," Atwood official Peter Fischer said. "In the early spring, Maine lobsters are hard-shelled with the highest meat content of the year."

Schafer has volunteered to prepare the lobsters when they arrive.

"I believe in the Mooresville Soup Kitchen and think it does a great job in helping the local community," he said.

Schafer has cooked for various charity events around the world, including one for the Paul Newman Foundation.

He has been a restaurant chef-owner for about 20 years and plans to open a restaurant on Williamson Road in June called Meat Market & Catering by Design.

LobsterFest tickets are $50 per person and include one lobster, shrimp, a baked potato, coleslaw, clam chowder and choice of water, tea or lemonade.

Tickets will be available only until mid-May at www.mooresvillesoupkitchen.com.
