The Davidson Parks and Recreation Department is taking registration for the popular summer Lake Norman Weight Loss Challenge.

Advance registration is required; visit www.d-Recs.org or call 704-892-3349. Unless otherwise noted, all programs meet at the Parks and Recreation office, 416 Armour St., Davidson.

The 12-week commitment for ages 14 and older meets 6:30-7:15 p.m. Thursdays starting June 16 and ending Aug. 18. At weekly meetings, participants weigh in and discuss various nutrition topics. The instructor is Michelle Morton.

The fee is $45 per participant ($30 goes toward the winner's pot, and $15 toward weekly prizes). Cash prizes are awarded for the largest percentage of body weight lost.

Penalty money - $1 charged per full pound gained and $5 for missing a class (one missed class allowed) - is paid to the person who loses the most inches and who didn't win another cash prize.

Big Day at the Lake needs boaters to host children from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Charlotte for a ride on Lake Norman on July 16.

Lake Norman cruises for children and their parents to spot Normie, the friendly Lake Norman monster, have been scheduled for 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday and June 21, July 5 and 19 and Aug. 2 and 16, aboard Championship Yacht Charters at Latitude 36 Raw Bar and Grille, 18665 Harborside Drive, Cornelius.

Huntersville-based Hinds' Feet Farm, which provides enrichment and other activities for people with brain injuries, recently received a $45,000 grant from the Wells Fargo Foundation to support the Hind's Feet Farm Veteran's Brain Injury Scholarship Fund.

Join the Amazing Critter Cruise, which will set sail at noon June 18 from Queen's Landing, 1459 River Highway (N.C. 150 West), Mooresville.

Cost of the three-hour tour, sponsored by Lake Norman Wildlife Conservationists, is $15 per person and includes child-friendly food, a narrated cruise of the lake and a live animal program.
