Mayor wants your ideas for road

Those of us who have lived in Cornelius for many years are grateful that phase I of the West Catawba Avenue widening project, from I-77 to Jetton Road, was completed recently.

Phase II, from Jetton to Sam Furr Road, is on the N.C. Department of Transportation's schedule for at least seven years from now. That's when state funding for the project should be available.

Now, however, it may be possible to accelerate the widening of West Catawba Avenue.

Our town is discussing with DOT a plan that could speed up the widening project by several years. Cornelius could advance money to DOT to start construction within the next few years. When DOT's money for phase II becomes available, it would reimburse the town with interest.

The transportation benefits of accelerating the widening of the rest of West Catawba Avenue will have to be weighed against the proposed financing. This would be a significant financing venture for Cornelius, as phase II is a multi-million-dollar project.
