Concord

Get involved: This year will mark the 10th year the city of Concord participates in National Night Out. At least 10 neighborhoods will join the city Aug. 2 for the national neighborhood crime and drug prevention event. The annual event has grown to 37 million people in 15,000 communities from all 50 states and military bases worldwide.

A wider Derita: Concord and the N.C. DOT have proposed to widen Derita Road in Concord between Poplar Tent Road and Concord Mills Boulevard. The proposed project will widen about 2.6 miles and include a four-lane divided road with a posted speed limit of 45 mph. Construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2013. Harrisburg

Top-10 finish: Harrisburg's JHE Production Group Inc. on July 8 was named the eighth "Top 300 Small Business of the South" by Business Leader magazine. Also a recipient of Business Leader's "Charlotte's Top Business" award, JHE competed against 300 small businesses. Founded in 1987, JHE serves an array of local and Fortune 500 clients, including the Carolina Panthers and Sprint.

Need a fan? The Cabarrus County Department of Aging and Senior Centers, made possible by community donations and a grant from Duke Energy, will provide 20-inch box fans to those age 60 or older without air conditioning in Cabarrus County.
