Huntersville Family Fitness and Aquatics is planning a lot of activities for this month.
SOULS, a free group for senior adults, will gather 9-11 a.m. Aug. 15 at HFFA. The group discusses and promotes healthy living through group exercise classes, free refreshments and social activities.
From 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 18, HFFA will host a Children's Services Open House. It will highlight the opportunities at HFFA for children to inspire their minds and bodies for healthy living. Tours, question-and-answer sessions and free information packets will be given.
Carolina Diving open tryouts will be 5-7 p.m. Aug. 26. Divers of all skill levels are invited. Watch team members display their skills and hear an introduction on how to get involved in the sport.
HFFA will also launch its "Couch to 5K" training program at 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Aug. 29. The program is designed to prepare both new and experienced runners for their first 5K road race or to record a most-improved 5K experience at HFFA's Fall Harvest Race on Oct. 29. This kickoff is free and open to all ages.
For aspiring runners, HFFA will begin training for the Fall Harvest 10K from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Aug 30. Runners build on their 5K foundation, tackle a new challenge or improve their performance and time. This event launches with a training overview and will have runners ready for the Fall Harvest Race on Oct. 29.

Back to school
Immediately after July Fourth, I noticed most local stores already had set up back-to-school sections.
Barely a month into the summer, the spiral notebooks, three-ring binders, overflow of lunchboxes and backpacks were back on the shelves. Seems summer goes by faster and faster and that seasonal shopping starts earlier and earlier.
I have not yet cruised the back-to-school aisles, but I noticed that one local store already had Halloween decorations for sale. I think tomorrow they may start putting up Christmas trees.
All this retail rushing makes me just want to slow down and take my time perusing the July Fourth and summer clearance sales, just so I can linger in the summer a little longer.
