The Kannapolis Intimidators, who were in first place in the South Atlantic League's Northern Division as of Thursday, will open an eight-game home stand today. at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in Kannapolis.

The team is a Class A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox.

Home games will be today through Wednesday against the West Virginia Power (Pittsburgh Pirates) and Thursday through next Sunday against the Hagerstown Suns (Washington Nationals).

The Old Courthouse Theatre will continue performances of "On Golden Pond" this week and next week.

The historic Carver community in Kannapolis, in partnership with Trinity United Methodist Church, will have a "Back-to-School Community Event" from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Kannapolis Intermediate School, 525 East C St., Kannapolis.

The public is invited for food, fun and games for people of all ages. School supplies being collected.

The Cooperative Christian Ministry is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a campaign to collect 30,000 pounds of food in August for its nine food pantry locations.

Items needed include canned meats and fish, canned fruit and vegetables, pasta, peanut butter, paper towels, chicken noodle and vegetable soups, pork and beans, pasta items, saltine crackers, peanut butter (16.3-to 18-ounce size), Vienna sausage, plastic grocery bags and any other nonperishable food item.

Donors can drop off food 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesdays at CCM's Crisis Center, 246 Country Club Drive, Concord.

Five Oaks Manor nursing home in Concord is inviting everyone interested to the first meeting at 7 p.m. Aug. 31 of a new support group on the topic "Dealing with Difficult Residents."

Those interested may include people who have a loved one in a nursing facility; who caring for a loved one with dementia; or who are responsible for a patient/resident who has difficult behaviors. Nursing home staff, residents, family members, health care providers and friends are encouraged to attend.
