Statesville workers get one-time bonus

Statesville's 500 municipal employees, who have gone three years without a salary increase, received good news in September.

The City Council approved a 2 percent, one-time bonus, which they should receive by the middle of October.

Higher sales tax collections were the main factor that permitted the city to implement the bonus. Until 2008, employees performing satisfactorily received 3.5 percent annual pay raises. Those were suspended when revenues fell.

The council also authorized a one-time application of educational incentives, where employees who earn college degrees receive a bonus.
