Run for Muscular Dystrophy

Brookhaven Family Run/Walk: The fourth annual Brookhaven Family Run/Walk for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy will be held 9 a.m. Oct. 29 in the Brookhaven subdivision, 3001 Stanbury Drive, Matthews.

The event will honor 7-year-old Jake Pritchard, who is battling the disease.

All proceeds will benefit Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy and go to research for a cure for Duchenne. The event will feature a 5K run ($15), a one-mile run ($10), and a kids' runs and activities. The event has raised more than $40,000 in the last three years for research.

Charity Relay Winners

Running with the Stars: Charlotte area residents Dori Luke of Matthews and James Tiller of Mooresville ran alongside U.S. Women's Soccer stars Hope Solo, Abby Wambach and Alex Morgan Oct. 9 as part of a charity relay at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

Luke and Tiller were chosen from hundreds who submitted ways to make opportunity possible in their communities with a charitable contribution from Bank of America. Luke chose Girls on the Run and Tiller chose Children's Miracle Network. Each charity will receive $5,000.

Pen Pals Book Club

Kickoff Event: Pen Pals Book Club is a group designed to help children of incarcerated parents, fight illiteracy and prevent children from following the trend of incarceration.

Children ages 2-19 are welcome to the kickoff event 3-5:30 p.m. Oct. 22 at Greenville Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, 6116 Monteith Drive. Even if you are not a child of an incarcerated parent, you are welcome to join and support your peers.

Hearts for Hearing

Donations Needed: The Rotary Foundation is collecting hearing aids to help with the hearing needs in third-world countries.

Hearts for Hearing has frequently partnered with the Rotary Foundation, which will go to Puerta Plata in January 2012 to help children with hearing impairment. Donate still-functioning, behind-the-ear hearing aids and all in-the-ear types through November to help the 2012 trip. Donations can be made at Hearing Solution Center, 6201 Fairview Road, Suite 200.

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Regatta and Photo Run: This sailing race to support leukemia and other similar cancers will be held 10:55 a.m. Oct. 22 near Shoal Marker .4 NM WNW of Channel Marker 2. Foundation for Respect Ability

Benefit Concert: The Foundation for Respect Ability will host an afternoon concert with Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary at the Knight Theatre 3 p.m. Oct. 30.
