Concord's Stormwater Services Department last week discovered a potential sinkhole under McGill Avenue Northwest.
All lanes of McGill Avenue, between Harris Street Northwest and Kerr Street Northwest, are closed indefinitely after city crews discovered a void under the road where a large stormwater pipe about 17 feet underground failed.
Workers onsite said the faulty pipe had the potential to create a sinkhole nearly 20 feet deep and 40 feet wide. It was discovered Oct. 28; emergency repairs to the pipe, ground and road began Oct. 31.
City officials expect repairs to take about a month. The city is encouraging motorists to avoid the area or follow the posted detour route.
All lanes of McGill Avenue Northwest are closed between Harris and Kerr streets. There are separate detour routes for cars and light vehicles and trucks and other heavy vehicles.
Residents and businesses in the area will retain access to their driveways.
