Renowned flutist Jill Felber, who has played at Carnegie Hall and on four continents, will give a free concert at 3 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church, 70 Union Street N, Concord.

Felber will be accompanied by pianist Dianne Frazer in classical and popular pieces ranging from Handel and Rachmaninoff to "Over the Rainbow." 704-788-2100.

Holiday festivities in Concord start with the city's 14th annual tree-lighting ceremony Friday.

5:30 p.m.: motorized trolley rides, horse-drawn carriage rides, children's activities. 6 p.m.: opening ceremony, introduction of Santa. 6:10 p.m.: music by The Choral Academy, Gary Gilmore and three elementary schools. 7:30 p.m.: Tree lighting and fireworks.

9 p.m. Friday, Modern Film Fest at the Davis presents the film "Automorphosis," a documentary about people who have turned cars into art.

The city and the North Carolina Research Campus have received Gov. Bev Perdue's 2011 Innovative Small Business Community Award. Kannapolis is one of nine N.C. communities honored in the award's inaugural year.

Kannapolis Parks and Recreation and Sweet Pickle Bakery and Delicatessen will host a gingerbread house workshop 10 a.m. Saturday, 930 Floyd St..
