Beads for Habitat: Habitat for Humanity Cabarrus County will host a Mardi Gras fundraiser Feb. 18 at Historic Gibson Mill.

There will be a silent auction, music and hors d'oeuvres. Tickets are $50, which includes two drinks. Volunteers Jerry Talbert, Sherman Greer, Dana Ritchie and Misty Moler, are vying for the title of Mardi Gras Jester. Supporters can vote for their favorite online, for $1 per vote, at www.HabitatCabarrus.org. Details: 704-786-4001.

Concord

Presidential meeting: Gary Walker, owner of Walker Marketing in Concord, was one of several N.C. businessmen to meet with President Obama and other White House officials earlier this month.

Walker was invited to the event because of his company's recent economic development success. He was the only one from the Charlotte metro area to attend.

Walker Marketing has worked to help save or create hundreds of jobs through initiatives such as the North Carolina Research Campus and the return of NASCAR to Rockingham Motor Speedway.

Harrisburg

Youth sports: Youth sports registration has begun, and the town is offering on-site and online registration. Children interested in baseball, soccer or softball can register through Feb. 3 for the spring sports season. Register in person at 4088 Stallings Road.
