Scott Avett, artist, musician, Cabarrus County resident and founding member of The Avett Brothers band, will exhibit his paintings Saturday at The Morrison condominiums, 532 Governor Morrison St., in Charlotte's SouthPark neighborhood.

The exhibit, titled "The Paintings of Scott Avett: Exploring Story and Spirituality," will be preceded by a private reception and fundraiser Friday, at which Avett will give a talk and question-and-answer session on how his faith journey and spiritual life inform his art.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit The Educational Center, a Charlotte-based nonprofit organization that creates resources and opportunities for people of all ages and faith backgrounds who seek spiritual growth and enrichment.

The exhibit will be open to the public 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, including opportunities to purchase original artwork and commemorative posters.

The Cabarrus Literacy Council will host a Scrabble fundraiser starting at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 29 at the Afton Tavern in Afton Village, 335 John Galt Way N.W., Concord.

Senior Health and Wellness Day will be 9 a.m.-1 p.m. March 14 at the Cabarrus Arena & Events Center, 4751 N.C. 49 N., Concord.

A canned food drive will help supply the Cooperative Christian Ministry's food pantry.

Health screenings offered will be mammograms (call 704-403-1729 for an appointment), cholesterol and blood sugar (fasting isn't required), stroke/blood pressure, vision, hearing, bone density testing and medication reviews.

The Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office will dispose of old medications for people and pets. The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas will conduct a blood drive.
