Mecklenburg County

North Mecklenburg High: Sharon Chen received a bronze medal in science at the GENIUS Olympiad environmental competition at State University of New York at Oswego in late June.

Chen received the medal in the resources and energy category for recovering copper for reuse from treated wood wastes. Participants in scientific and artistic disciplines from more than 50 countries and 30 states competed in the global high school event.

Terra Science and Education Foundation of Syracuse is the event organizer.

Mallard Creek: James Hoover has been selected by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation to serve as a youth ambassador on its 2014-2015 Youth Advisory Board.

The sophomore was chosen for his commitment and work to reverse the nation’s childhood-obesity epidemic. Hoover previously implemented a pilot health program at Ridge Road Middle that educated students about healthy choices. As a youth ambassador, Hoover will organize community support for more physical fitness activities for students during and after school and healthier options in school vending machines.

J.V. Washam Elementary: The school has changed the times of its open house Aug. 21.

Grades kindergarten through second will be 2-3 p.m. Grades three through five will be 6-7 p.m.

• The school will hold an introduction for new Principal Paula Rao 3-4 p.m. and 6-7 p.m. Aug. 14 in the Media Center. Students, parents and community members are invited.

Garinger High: Open house will be 5-7 p.m. Aug. 21.

Independence High: Open house will be Aug. 21, from 2-3 p.m. for freshmen and 3-4 p.m. for upperclassmen. “Patriot Life Line” for rising freshmen will be 2-5 p.m. Aug. 14.

Rocky River High: The school will hold an open house 6-7:30 p.m. Aug. 21.

Hough High: Open house will be 9:30-11 a.m. Aug. 22. Students and parents can tour the school and meet teachers.

Cabarrus County

Cabarrus County Schools: Open houses will be on the following dates: elementary schools, 5-7 p.m. Aug. 21; middle schools, 4-6 p.m. Aug. 20; high schools, 6:30-8 p.m. Aug. 20.

• Cabarrus Family Medicine awarded the following local students college scholarships July 28: Anna Carroll, Benjamin Cauthen, Hiwot Ekuban, Macey Fairchild, Tristen Frampton, Amber Jordan, Haley Leazer, Zackary Medlin, Kaela Powers, Anna Wallace, Kenneth Webb Jr., Joshua White, Brock Masters, Harrison Reiff and Brandon Furr.

Cannon School: New-student orientation will be Aug. 15 at the following times: junior kindergarten families, 8:30-9:15 a.m.; new lower-school families, kindergarten and grades kindergarten through fourth, 9:15-10 a.m.; new middle-school families and all rising fifth-grade families, 10-11 a.m.; new upper-school families and all rising freshmen, 11 a.m.-noon.

Union County

Weddington Elementary: Kristen Sebek has been named principal. Sebek had served as assistant principal at Rocky River Elementary.

South Providence: Willie Howard III has been named site-based administrator for middle-school students. Howard currently is an assistant principal at Central Academy of Technology and Arts.

Central Academy of Technology and Arts: Recent graduate Kaley Kirby finished fourth in the Life Support Skills event at the Health Occupations Students of America National Leadership Conference in late June in Orlando, Fla. Kirby qualified for the national event after placing third in the state competition.

Cuthbertson High: Open house will be 5:30-7:30 p.m. Aug. 21. Students can meet teachers, pick up PowerSchool login information and purchase spirit wear and physical-education uniforms.

Marvin Ridge High: Orientation dates are as follows: seniors, 8-11 a.m. Aug. 13; juniors, 8-11 a.m. Aug. 14; sophomores, 8-11 a.m. Aug. 18; freshmen, Aug. 19, last names A-L from 8-10 a.m., M-Z from 10:30a.m.- 12:30 p.m.

Parkwood High: Open house will be 4-6 p.m. Aug. 22. Parents and students will receive schedule information and meet the teachers. Freshmen orientation will be 3-4:30 p.m. Aug. 17 in the gym.

Sun Valley High: Freshman orientation will be 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 20. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. in the main gym. Breakfast will be served. Students will receive schedules and have a school tour.

Weddington High: Open house will be held Aug. 19 for 10th- through 12th-grades; seniors 9-11 a.m.; juniors, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.; sophomores, 1-3 p.m.

York County

Fort Mill School District: Elementary open houses will be 3-5 p.m. Aug. 14.

Clover High: Athletic Director Carroll Hester has been named the South Carolina Athletic Director of the Year by the S.C. Athletic Coaches Association. Hester received the honor July 28 at the association’s annual meeting.

Fort Mill High: Freshman orientation will be 4-7 p.m. Aug. 13. A parent meeting will be 6:30-7 p.m.

Northwestern High: Freshman orientation will be 9-11 a.m. Aug. 11 in the F gym.

Rock Hill District: At the July 28 meeting, the board approved the following appointments: Rhonda Kelsey, principal at Ebinport Elementary; Jacob Moree, principal at Mount Gallant Elementary; Chris Beard, principal at Ebenezer Avenue Elementary; Kay Owens, assistant principal at Richmond Drive Elementary; and Andrew Williams, assistant principal at Northwestern High.
