Main library hours cut: The Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 2 cut six hours of operation per week from the Concord main library and four hours per week from the Kannapolis branch of the Cabarrus County Public Library system. The cuts were required in order to standardize operating hours throughout the system.
According to a news release from the county, the Concord, Harrisburg, Kannapolis and Mount Pleasant branches will be open 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays beginning Sept. 8. All branches will be closed Fridays and Sundays. Cabarrus County

Military get free dental exams: In observance of Freedom Day USA on Sept. 11, doctors will be offering free dental exams and cleanings to all veterans and active duty military, National Guard and Reserve service members and their families that day. Bring your VA card, military ID or DD Form 214.
Preview the parks master plan: The city of Kannapolis has drafted a Parks & Recreation Master Plan based on residents’ input from workshops and online and telephone surveys. The plan outlines priorities for Parks & Recreation facilities over the next 10 years. The public is invited to an overview of the master plan at 7 p.m. Sept. 18 in the Village Park building. City officials will discuss the types of parks, playgrounds, recreational centers and amenities that have been identified as needs. After adoption by the City Council, the plan will give Kannapolis a blueprint to improve parks, greenways and recreation facilities.
Kickball for child cancer research: CMC–NorthEast Stadium in Kannapolis will host the second annual Charlotte Kicks-It kickball tournament 3-7 p.m. Sept. 7, sponsored by NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon and the Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation. The event will raise money for child cancer research at Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte. Twenty teams will compete for a one-of-a-kind trophy and the title of “Best Kickball Team in Town.” It’s open to the public for a donation at the gate. ClearWater artist’s show: The work of Louise Farley, a figurative painter who works at a studio in Concord’s ClearWater Artist Studios, is on display throughout September at the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center in Albemarle. The show will feature Farley’s “Mexico” and “Montreal” series of paintings. The “Montreal” series stems from a single afternoon with her husband and stepdaughter. The “Mexico” series is a collection of images from a trip to San Miguel de Allende. ClearWater is an artist-incubator/community-development project in Concord.
