Sea Life Charlotte-Concord Aquarium names guitarfish after band

The Sea Life Charlotte-Concord Aquarium has a new resident that some say looks like a guitar and carries the name of a nationally known alternative rock band.

The band, Anberlin, came to the release ceremony Nov. 20.

The shovelnose guitarfish, with the head of a ray and a body similar to that of a shark, looks to some like a modern guitar when it rests with its tail straight out.

Displays curator David Cochran said “Anberlin” is a member of the ray family. It lives off the coast of California. The animal will grow to a length of 5 1/2 feet as an adult.

“We wanted to do something a little different for an animal like this, and we figured with a guitarfish, bringing in a rock band and giving it that name would be interesting,” Cochran said.

After Cochran released the guitarfish into the “Bay of Rays” exhibit, Anberlin lead singer Stephen Christian said, “I think that’s one of the biggest honors we’ve ever had as a band.”
