Financial Aid Night: 6:30-7:45 p.m. Jan. 26, Hamrick Theater, Carolinas Medical Center–Northeast, 920 Church St. N., Concord. High school juniors and seniors and their parents may come to learn about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and the financial aid application process.

Winecoff Elementary

Staff honors: Math lead teacher Susan Frazier was the December Teacher of the Month. The Staff Member of the Month for December was Teresa Siler of the custodial staff. Siler has been a staff member at Winecoff for more than 30 years.

Mount Pleasant Middle

Spelling bee winner: Joey Sisinyak was the winner of the Mount Pleasant Middle School Spelling Bee on Dec. 11. Joey will compete in the Cabarrus County District Spelling Bee on Jan. 7 at Winkler Middle School. Other top participants in the school bee were A.J. Vazquez, second place, and Madison Harris, third.

Wrestling championship: The Tigers wrestling team won the conference championship Dec. 13 at Harris Road Middle School.

Gold medal winners were Cade McDonald, Michael Lambert, Garrett Overbay, Garrett McManus, Jacob Shields and Robert Tyler. Silver medal winners were Mackay Burke, Cade Couch and Eli Williams. The bronze medal winner was Preston Hudnall.

Tigers wrestlers who finished the season undefeated were Cade McDonald, 13-0; Garrett McManus, 12-0; Robert Tyler, 12-0; and Jacob Shields with a two-year record of 26-0.

Central Cabarrus High

Test proctors: Volunteers are needed to proctor tests Jan. 12-16 at the school. For details, visit

Cox Mill High

Test proctors: Volunteers are needed to monitor students as they take the N.C. final exams Jan. 12-16. Proctors will help pass out testing materials to students, monitor students during testing and escort students to and from test locations to restrooms. Most proctors are needed in the mornings. Afternoon proctoring is on an as-needed or emergency basis; afternoon testing sessions may end earlier than expected. Details and signups:

Hickory Ridge High

Test proctors: Volunteers from the community are needed to proctor for N.C. final exams 7-11 a.m. Jan. 12-15 at the school. Proctors help monitor students during testing to ensure that testing occurs fairly and uniformly. Details:

Band honors: The Northwest Cabarrus High School marching band won first place in the Concord Christmas Parade on Nov. 22 and the Kannapolis Christmas Parade on Dec. 13.

Shady Brook Elementary

Fundraising event: The monthly Sweet Frog frozen yogurt fundraising night for January will take place 4-8 p.m. Jan. 7 at the Sweet Frog, 2231 Spider Drive N.E., Kannapolis. A portion of sales will benefit the school.

Exchange program: The Council on International Educational Exchange is seeking families in Cabarrus and surrounding counties to host international high school exchange students arriving in August 2015.
