Home Economist has a new name

Local health food grocer Home Economist Market is shedding its longtime name for a new one – Healthy Home Market.

The store, with locations in the Sedgefield neighborhood, east Charlotte and Davidson, has been known as Home Economist for all of its 27 years. The name was inspired by home economics, which was intended to evoke thoughts of healthy meal planning, value and quality.

However, the moniker had become confusing over time, with people wondering whether the store sold fabric or was a financial company, store officials said.

After 52 years in business, Myers Park's Elfrieda's Flowers will close on Nov. 30.

The flower and gift shop was one of the original tenants of Park Road Shopping Center and was originally owned by Elfrieda Madden. Since 1996, the store has been owned by Richard Lisenby and Ben D'Agostino, who are retiring.

The owners said the store suffered from competition from large national discount stores and grocery stores. That and the recent economic downturn led to the decision to close.

Christmas is more than a month away, but Santa's starting early. He arrived last week at Northlake and SouthPark malls. He'll be available daily through the holiday season.
