Army Pfc. Jeffrey Harmon Jr. recently graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia.

During the nine weeks of training, Harmon studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises.

He is the son of Jeffrey Harmon of Jacksonville, Fla., and Meliana Hicks of Cherryville.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Charles Norris recently graduated from the Air Traffic Control Operations apprentice course at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Miss.

The course is designed to train students to control en route and terminal air traffic by use of visual, radar, and non-radar means at air traffic control tower facilities. Students learn aircraft identification and to initiate and issue air traffic control clearances, instructions and advisories to ensure the safe, orderly and expeditious flow of air traffic operating under instrument and visual flight rule.

Norris is the son of Joe Norris Jr. of Lincolnton and Donna Parker of Cramerton.

Air Force Airman Justin Johnson recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

During the six weeks of training, Johnson studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises and special training in human relations.

In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Johnson earned distinction as an honor graduate.

He is the son of Demetria Johnson of Gastonia and Wade Johnson of Catonsville, Md.

The airman is a 2006 graduate of Ashbrook High School, Gastonia.

Army Reserve Pvt. Kendle McGill recently graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia.

During the nine weeks of training, McGill studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises.

She is the daughter of Jeannette Lowery of Gastonia.

Army National Guard Pfc. Christopher Karst recently graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Ga.

Karst is the son of Victoria Messer of Morganton.

Army Pvt. Todd Prior recently graduated from basic combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

Prior is the son of Harold and Paulette Prior of Morganton.

Joey Walker has recently been promoted to the rank of chief master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. Walker, a personnel superintendent with 26 years of military service, is assigned to the 1st Fighter Wing, Hampton, Va. He is the son of Shirley Stephenson and Joe Walker, both of Lenoir.
