Stanley Rescue Cadet Christopher Withers recently received the 2008 Cadet of the Year Award from the Gaston County Rescue and Ambulance Association and Gaston County Emergency Services.
Withers joined Stanley Rescue as a cadet at age 14. He is the son of Colin and Renee Withers, who are the squad's captain and first lieutenant.
Withers has helped respond to a variety of calls, including sickness, chest pains, suicide and motor vehicle accidents in which injured victims were extricated.
He is a student at Highland School of Technology and works about 20 hours a week with his family's business and volunteers as a junior firefighter with the Alexis Volunteer Fire Department.
The following teachers recently received Gaston County Education Foundation's Ron Ensley Teacher Scholarships:
Mary Airhart and six team members, Belmont Middle, $1,000 to attend the N.C. Middle School conference; Karen Packer, Webb Street, $275 for a study on Autism Spectrum Disorder; Shannon Froehlich, Warlick Alternative, $1,000 to attend the conference on aggression; Rhonda Rowe, Hunter Huss High, $5,000 to purchase a Geometer's Sketchpad and other classroom materials; Catherine Roark, Hunter Huss High, $750 to attend the UNCC Summer Institute in Germany; JoAnne Coombs and Torben Ross of Ashbrook High, Carolyn Saunders of Grier Middle and Tammy Mims, Science Curriculum Specialist, $325 each to attend the International Science Fair in Atlanta.
Several other teachers also received mini-grants through the foundation.
