Captain Wayne Haigler of Lenoir recently received the Master Pilot Award, honoring his 50 years in aviation, including over 26,000 hours of flying time, without an accident.

Haigler received the award in Asheville from Cindy Carter, president of Western North Carolina Pilots Association

During the Korean War, Haigler was a Navy pilot where he flew the SNJ trainer; PB4Y2 (Navy version of the B-24 bomber); and the Lockheed Neptune P2V anti-submarine patrol aircraft.

He had a 35-year career with Eastern Airlines

Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute has reappointed three board of trustee members: James Sponenberg, Larry Taylor and Jerry Church. Student government association president Dana Boone also will serve a one-year term.

Alexander County commissioners Wes Bolick and Harold Odom and Alexander County Manager Rick French attended the N.C. Association of County Commissioners' annual conference Aug. 21-24 in New Bern.

Keynote speaker Glen Hiemstra, a futurist, discussed trends that will have an impact on N.C. counties. He noted the state's population has continued to get older on average and more diverse, and that these demographics will change the demand for of services provided by counties.
