Little Miss Gastonia pageant applications are now available for the 2009 pageant, scheduled for Oct. 11.

Girls up to age 18 compete in eight age categories. Winners and runners-up represent Gaston County in the 2009 Little Miss North Carolina state pageant.

Girls ages newborn-6 years compete in sportswear and beauty with photogenic optional. Girls ages 7-18 compete in interview and beauty with talent, swimsuit and photogenic optional.

The 2008 Gaston County Big Sweep will be Oct. 4.

Cleanups may occur anytime during September and October, however.

Volunteers are needed to adopt and clean streams, lakes, rivers, parks, and school campuses. Gloves and bags will be provided. Details: 704-869-1008.

A pet blessing and celebration of St. Francis of Assisi Day will be from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 27 at Lutheran Chapel, 702 N. New Hope Road in Gastonia.

Children without pets may bring stuffed animals.

Also attending will be representatives of Carolina Raptor Center, the Snake Man, police K-9 officers and the sheriff's “Leash on Life” program. Details: heatherhodde@yahoo.com.
