The Nelson Company, a Baltimore-based manufacturer and reconditioner of wooden pallets, has opened a new facility in Claremont in Catawba County.

It operates from a 36,000-square-foot former furniture warehouse on Heart Drive. The company also distributes plastic pallets imported from Germany and can manufacture metal racking systems, corrugated products and crates. It is also investigating options to recycle or find a local user for its scrap.

Customers from Amy's Hallmark in Valley Hills Mall have donated over 500 cards that will be used by residents at Abernethy Laurels, a retirement community in Newton.

The donations are through the company's "Cards Because You Care” Campaign.

Real estate agent Yessenia “Jessie” Calderon has joined Trademark Realty of Hickory. Calderon is fluent in Spanish and will be assisting the Hispanic community in Catawba County and surrounding areas.
