Teens with Character

Know youths doing good things? Nominate them for the YMCA of Catawba Valley's 8th Annual YMCA Teen Character Awards.

The awards will be presented Nov. 6 to outstanding teens who have demonstrated caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

Deadline for nominations is Oct.6.

The YMCA also is awarding a $500 scholarship, in honor of Gary and Mary Hogue, to a high school senior who is nominated for a YMCA Teen Character Award.

Little Miss Gastonia

Little Miss Gastonia pageant applications are available for the 2009 pageant, scheduled for Oct.11.

Girls up to age 18 compete in eight age categories. Winners and runners-up represent Gaston County in the 2009 Little Miss North Carolina state pageant.

Candidates forum Oct. 7

The Lincolnton-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce will host a candidates forum and reception Oct. 7 at the chamber, 101 E. Main St. in Lincolnton.

A reception begins at 6:30 p.m. followed by a question-and-answer forum at 7 p.m.

Candidates for federal, state and county and school board positions have been invited.

The event is open to the public.

Morganton officers

Officers Benjamin Carswell and Joseph Young have joined the Morganton Department of Public Safety.

Carswell graduated from Freedom High School and Young graduated from East Burke.

Police seek your tips

Caldwell County law enforcement officials have asked for tips to help find anyone illegally distributing prescription drugs or other illegal substances.

Last week, officers charged John Rhodes Hart of Hudson with numerous controlled-substance violations involving oxycodone, a prescription painkiller.

The arrest closed a three-month investigation by the Caldwell County Sheriff's Office and Hudson Police Department. More arrests are expected.
