U.S. Air Force First Lt. Joel J. Fox of Morganton was recently deployed to Afghanistan. Fox serves with the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing at Bagram Air Field, the largest U.S. military installation in Afghanistan. Fox is a strategic logistics systems development chief, providing logistics policy guidelines for the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of the Interior. He leads the Afghan national army logistics school's integrated process team. Fox, who has served in the U.S. military for 16 years, is the son of Kathy L. Fox and Dennis E. Keller, both of Morganton. He is married to Nichole, daughter of Edward Harmon and Barbara White, both of Michigan.

Fox graduated from Freedom High School in Morganton in 1992, and earned a bachelor's degree in 2002 from Southern Illinois University. He earned a master's degree from Webster University in 2004.

U.S. Air Force Airman Cory C. Coffey has completed basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. In addition to his basic training, Coffey received special training in human relations. He also earned credits toward an associate in applied science degree from the Community College of the U.S. Air Force Coffey is the son of Tina Trivette of Deep Gap and grandson of Bill Coffey of Lenoir. He is a 2007 graduate of Watauga High School in Boone.
