A spelling bee that's only for the adults

Children should not be the only ones to enjoy the thrill of competitive spelling. Adults have a chance to participate in the Business Buzz, “Raisin' the ‘Honey Money,'” sponsored by the Caldwell Chamber of Commerce. The event is held to raise funds for the local schools, but that sounds like a good excuse for having some fun.

Local businesses and civic groups will enter teams, paying $100 to play. With a total of eight per team, four members may come from the sponsored school classroom, plus four members from the organization.

Additional funds may be used to “buy words” that teams are unable to spell. Called “Honey Money” in keeping with the Bee motif, this insurance has to be purchased in advance and is nonrefundable.

Winners choose the classrooms or nonprofits to receive a $500 grant and will support the Chamber education projects and Leadership Caldwell.

To understand the light-hearted nature of this competition, note rules such as: “Profanity, name-calling, and derogatory remarks may only be directed at other members of the team and must be done in a “polite and genteel manner.”

The Adult Bee will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 20 in the Hudson Uptown Building. To enter a team, call Debbie Eller at 828-759-2852.
