Musical premiere: Hickory Arts and Hickory Community Theatre present “Junk: An Original Musical” in the newly renovated Fireman’s Kitchen. Performances are 7:30 p.m. Thursdays and 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, now through Jan. 31 at Hickory Theatre, 30 W. 3rd St. N.W., Hickory.

Inspired by a passage from Sue Monk Kidd’s book “The Mermaid Chair,” “Junk” is a story about a yard sale, a mermaid and the lives of people around it, both sellers and buyers. The new musical was created by playwright Molly Bass and composer Jeff Hartman and is directed by Pamela Livingstone.

“Junk” is produced by Jim and Judith Tarlton, and is part of Hickory Theatre’s 2014-15 season sponsored by Paramount Automotive. Tickets are $16 and can be purchased at www.hickorytheatre.org or by calling the ticket office at 828-328-2283.

Rotarian Idol: Hickory Rotary Club will hold its musical fundraiser Rotarian Idol at 7 p.m. March 14 in P.E. Monroe Auditorium on the campus of Lenoir-Rhyne University, Hickory. Contestants will compete for $5,000 in total prize money and door prizes will be awarded to winning ticket holders.

Money raised from this year’s event will benefit educational needs throughout Catawba County and other humanitarian causes supported by Rotary. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children and students with a valid ID. Advertisements for the show program and sponsorships are also being sold.
