Lake Norman high school sports winter season standouts

Davidson Day sophomore Maya Caldwell led the Patriots girls’ basketball team to the semifinals of the NCISAA 2A state tournament and was named to the 2A all-state team for the second straight year. Along the way, she also became the first player in school history to reach 1,000 career points.

After each season, the Observer publishes its all-star teams, highlighting the best athletes in the area.

In the community papers, we wanted to do something a little different.

While those top athletes deserve recognition, we decided to highlight a handful performers who are perhaps lesser-known but who also had a significant impact, especially in the biggest moments of the season.

There are sure to be many great sports stories from the winter season that we missed. If you know of one, email it to mynews@charlotteobserver.com.

There will be a similar feature for the spring sports season. Here’s hoping for more great sports stories.

Click on the images below for more on each of the performers.
