Scholarships

Church’s Chicken: The company recently announced its 2016 Church’s Scholars, and among the scholarship recipients is Nicholas Rios from Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology in Charlotte. Rios is among 225 high school seniors across 16 states who were selected to each receive $1,000 toward their college tuition.

Davidson College: Walker Austell, of Matthews, has received the Robert J. Lake Scholarship as an incoming student at Davidson College. Walker will enroll with the Class of 2020 in August.

Walker is the daughter of Robert Austell and Heather Austell of Brittle Creek Drive,and is a graduate of David W. Butler High School.

The Julian and Robert J. Lake Scholarship, for children of Presbyterian clergy, was established by J. Gilmour Lake ’58 and his wife, Gail, to honor his father, a member of the Class of 1928, and in memory of his brother, a member of the Class of 1966. One Lake Scholar, selected on the basis of academic and personal excellence, is named in each entering class.

Daisy Awards: Three nurses have been recognized as extraordinary nurses by the Daisy Foundation. Those honored are Katherine Rhame, BSN, Critical Care Unit, 3rd Quarter 2015 Daisy Award; Patricia “Rae” Mitchell, RN, Medical / Surgical Unit, 4th Quarter 2015 Daisy Award; and Shuna Harper, MHSAE, BSN, RN, director of the medical / surgical unit, Daisy Leader of the Year Award 2015.

Girl Scouts

Silver Award recipients: Archana Jayasekar and Rajani Guditi from Girl Scout Troop 3744, ninth-graders at Ardrey Kell High School, earned their award by forming a club at Community House middle school for tutoring seventh-grade students in math.

Military

Graduation: U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Allan J. Leone graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Leone earned distinction as an honor graduate.

He is the son of Bonni and Gary Leone of Cornelius. The airman is also the brother of Breena Leone, Dori Leone and Carli Leone.

Leone graduated in 2010 from East Gaston High School, Mount Holly, and earned a bachelor's degree in 2014 from Western Carolina University, Cullowhee.

Graduation: U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Madison B. Carson graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Carson is the daughter of Ramona C. Britto of Statesville.

She graduated in 2015 from the Visual Performing Arts Center, Statesville, and earned an associate degree in 2015 from Mitchell Community College, Statesville.
