The Davidson Cornelius All-Stars will play in Chino Hills, Calif., today, wrapping up round-robin play in the PONY-13 World Series baseball tournament.
The team – composed of 15 players from Davidson, Cornelius and southern Iredell County – earned the trip to the West Coast by winning the East region championship last week. The All-Stars won that with a convincing 15-4 win against Hagerstown, Md., on Tuesday at Davidson's McEver Field.
Ralph Angiuoli Jr., the president of the Davidson Youth Baseball Association, said that marked the first time a north Mecklenburg team advanced to the PONY World Series.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these kids,” he said. “But they've done everything we've asked. It has been a heck of a run.”
