Davidson Chocolate Co. features handmade sweets made from century-old recipes

Chocolatiers John and Sue Elliott and their son, John, use 100-year-old European recipes for the handmade chocolates at their new Davidson Chocolate Co., in the Harris Teeter center off Interstate 77 Exit 30.

The store, which opened on Aug. 22, also features 15 flavors of truffles, plus creams, confections, fudge and ice cream, including sundaes, cones and milkshakes.

Visitors can watch through large windows from a sidewalk as workers make the chocolates in a kitchen.

Davidson Chocolate Co. also sells gift baskets, coffee mugs and aprons, and it ships nationwide. It takes corporate orders and does custom molds.

The family moved to the Lake Norman area in February from Franklin, where they operated Mountainside Chocolates for five years. They previously lived in Nashville, Tenn. Their son, John, is a 2005 Davidson College graduate.

The century-old chocolate recipes originated with the Drost family of Holland, they said.

Eric Rice joins Maddi's Southern Bistro

as executive chef, plans new menu

Eric Rice, formerly of Charlotte Country Club, is the new executive chef at Maddi's Southern Bistro in Birkdale Village.

Rice has begun planning Maddi's new fall menu – favorite selections will remain – and is emphasizing local products such as pork from Grateful Growers in Denver, rice and grits from Anson Mills and organic produce from local farmers markets.

Donatos Pizza opening soon in Harris Teeter center, with take-out and delivery

Donatos Pizza is opening soon in the Harris Teeter center off I-77 Exit 30.

Ohio-based Donatos sells 16 signature pizzas, plus salads, stromboli and French-roll subs for eat-in, take-out or delivery.

Founder Jim Grote was a sophomore at Ohio State University in 1963 when he opened his first Donatos in Columbus, Ohio. Donatos now has about 200 restaurants in several states, including one that opened early this year in the Northcross II center in Huntersville.
